Modern James Grove & Sons

The business was founded in 1857 and the site on the Stourbridge Road, Halesowen, has been our home since 1865

Hand Cutting of Horn.

Work has continued over the years to improve our facilities here, to enable us to be leaders in quality and service and have built up an enviable reputation with our customers. In the early 1900`s buttons were made by hand and polished by hand - Thus we employed about 600 men and women making Horn buttons only. Today, we employ around 40 people using sophisticated machinery and polishing techniques which are a far cry from the early 1900`s, not only making Horn buttons, but Polyester, Urea and Metal. One of our traditional trades was uniform buttons, supplying the Ministry of Defence, British Railways, the G.P.O (Post Office), and many Sailing Clubs etc. Alas, the days of the traditional uniform are gone, so this is a much smaller part of our production. The modern version of this traditional trade is personalised buttons in Horn, Polyester or Urea or personalised Metal buttons. The Horn/Polyester/Urea buttons can be etched on the front and back or sides of a button, while Metal buttons are traditionally stamped, although it is possible to use the etching process on Metal buttons.

The clothing industry in this country has been shrinking over the years, so we rely heavily on exports and are pleased that we have remained competitive in the world market place. Aerial View of Site
